Turkey slams UAE involvement in regional conflicts

Turkey lambasted the United Arab Emirates for its involvement in Syria and Libya, warning it would hold the Gulf state accountable "at the right place and time", TRT World reported on Thursday.

Turkey and the UAE support opposite sides of a major confrontation between the Tripoli-based Government of National Accord (GNA) and rebel General Khalifa Haftar’s self-styled Libyan National Army (LNA), respectively, in Libya’s six-year-old civil war.

Two weeks ago, senior U.S. diplomat David Schenker, accused the UAE, as well as other Haftar allies Russia and Egypt, of violating the U.N. arms embargo on Libya, while rebuking the European Union for limiting its maritime interdictions to Turkey, which is providing its own military support to the GNA.

Meanwhile, the New Arab, a London-based news outlet, reported in June that UAE had allegedly provided financial aid to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, an outlaw armed Kurdish group designated a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States and the European Union, in Iraqi Kurdistan. A security source from Kurdistan Regional Government said the authority enforced restrictions on money transfers from coming from the UAE.

“The UAE supports terrorist organisations hostile to Turkey with the intention of harming us,” TRT World quoted Turkish Defence Minister Hulusi Akar as saying.

He warned the UAE to consider its size and its reach before continuing with its foreign agenda of spreading sedition and corruption, and called the small Gulf country a pawn serving the political and military agenda of other countries, according to TRT World.

Akar also called on Egypt to abstain from statements that “do not serve peace in Libya, but rather fuel the war”.

In June, Egypt's President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi threatened Turkey and the GNA with military intervention should they attempt to rout the LNA from Al-Jufra and Sirte, calling two strategic locations in Libya a “red line” for Cairo.
