Turkish rapper accused of encouraging drug use says quitting rap, pursuing law degree

Turkish rapper Ezhel, who spent two months behind bars in 2018 for promoting drug use and is currently facing another lawsuit on the same charge, said he’s throwing in the towel on his rap career to pursuit a degree in law, independent T24 news site reported on Saturday.

‘’People are out there [in Turkey] murdering each other, I haven’t even hurt an ant,’’ Ezhel, whose real name is  Sercan İpekçioğlu, said on Instagram.

‘’Where are you when we need justice most, when all these horrible things are happening? I’m quitting rap and becoming a lawyer,’’ he added.

The 28-year-old, who is a native of Turkey’s capital city of Ankara and one of the country’s most successful rap artists, was arrested in May 2018 for allegedly encouraging drug use through his lyrics and social media accounts. Ezhel, who faced up to 10 years in jail, was acquitted in June in a case that received international attention.

The Anadolu Chief Public Prosecutor’s office filed another case against Ezhel for ‘’encouraging drug use,’’ earlier this week. The rapper, whose songs have millions of hits on YouTube, faces up to five years in prison.
