A Turk consumes annually an average of 1,300 cups of tea

Turks are among top tea consumer nations in the world and a Turkish person consumes an average of 1,300 cups of tea every year, the head of an Istanbul based teahouse association told Anadolu Agency on Friday.

Serdar Erşahin, the head of the association, told Anadolu that Turkey was a top tea consuming nation, according to a report prepared by the International Tea Committee. Turks consume around 3-5 cups of tea daily, while this number increases to 10 cups during winter, he said

The culture of drinking tea is indispensable for Turks as it is an occasion to sit and talk, Erşahin said, adding that tea houses were historically places for Turkish people to socialise.

Turks usually do not use tea bags and make tea in a different way than the rest of the world by brewing it for almost 20 minutes.

Turkey is also an important tea producer and exporter. According to the Eastern Black Sea Exporters Association, Turkey exported tea to 93 countries and earned revenues over $4.5 million in the first half of 2018.
