Erdoğan, rival İmamoğlu most liked politicians in Turkey – pollster

A study by pollster Metropoll has shown that Turkey’s best liked politicians in November were President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Istanbul’s Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, with 44.3 and 36.1 per cent of participants respectively saying they like them.

According to the first results of the study posted on Twitter by founder and chairman of Metropoll Özer Sencar on Monday, main opposition Republican People’s Party’s (CHP) leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu came fourth with 25.7 per cent, behind İmamoğlu and CHP’s Ankara Mayor Mansur Yavaş, who received 26 per cent.

Erdoğan’s ally Devlet Bahçeli, leader of the far right Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), was in fifth place with 25.4 per cent, while Meral Akşener of the Good Party, founded in part by former members of the MHP over opposition to the party’s support for Erdoğan, received 21.2 per cent.

Former leader of the pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) Selahattin Demirtaş, who has been in prison since 2016, received 16.2 per cent, putting him above the 13.5 and 12.4 per cent received respectively by Ahmet Davutoğlu and Ali Babacan, both former heavyweights of the president’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), who have been planning two separate breakaway parties.

Sencar said the full report would be published on Tuesday.

A poll by the AKP in November had found the top three most popular politicians among the ruling party's base to be Erdoğan, İmamoğlu and Demirtaş, in this order.
