Suspect in Turkish diplomat assassination arrested

Turkish security forces on Tuesday arrested a man suspected of being involved in the killing of Turkey’s consul in the semi-autonomous Kurdistan region of northern Iraq last year, the state-run Anadolu news agency reported.

Osman Köse, who was serving at Turkey's Consulate General in the Kurdish region’s capital Erbil, was gunned down when an assassin sprayed gunfire across a restaurant in July, also killing two customers.

Turkish police and officers from the National Intelligence Organisation apprehended the suspect as he tried to enter Turkey’s southeastern province of Şırnak.

Last August the Turkish air force killed two other men believed to have taken part in the attack, Anadolu said.

Turkey says the attackers were members of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), an outlawed armed group that launched an armed uprising in Turkey aimed at Kurdish self-rule in 1984.
