Turkey’s daily COVID-19 cases nearly double from July low

Turkey’s cases of the COVID-19 virus almost doubled on a daily basis from a July low, data published on Tuesday showed.

Infections rose to 8,780, the Health Ministry said. Cases had dropped to as low as 4,418 on July 4.

Turkey has eased most restrictions on the population and many Turks are mingling with their families or are on vacation at seaside resorts to mark an annual religious holiday. Health Minister Fahrettin Koca warned earlier this week that citizens should be mindful that the virus is still spreading and take the necessary precautions.

The country reported a record daily infection tally of more than 63,000 in April, prompting the government to reintroduce tight lockdown measures, including curfews.
