Turks barred from following alcohol firms on social media - report

Turkish social media users have been barred from following some alcohol manufacturers on Twitter and Instagram, Cumhuriyet newspaper reported.

It was not immediately clear why some Turks were unable to subscribe to the companies’ social media feeds, Cumhuriyet said. Heineken and Carlsberg were among the accounts that were unreachable to some users.

The ban may have been implemented by the firms themselves, rather than the Turkish authorities, which have made no official statement on the matter, the newspaper reported, citing Professor Yaman Akdeniz, a law professor at Istanbul’s Bilgi University.

Turkey’s Islamist-leaning government has banned advertising by alcohol companies and raised taxes on beer, whisky and other drinks sharply as part of a campaign to reduce consumption.
