Twitter verifies handle of Syrian Kurdish group

Leading social networking service Twitter awarded an official blue check mark of verification to the account of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), Turkish pro-government daily Sabah reported on Tuesday, calling the decision a scandal.

Turkey sees the SDF and its affiliate People’s Protection Units (YPG) as offshoots of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), which has been fighting inside Turkey for more than three decades and is designated a terrorist organisation by Turkey, the European Union and the United States.

Twitter verified the handle @cmoc_sdf, the official SDF account named after its Coordination & Military Ops Center. According to Twitter’s website, the blue verified badge lets people know that an account of public interest is authentic.

Sabah said granting the SDF account a blue check mark signaled support to the organisation, adding that the SDF would now have a stronger hand against notifications and complaints filed against it on Twitter.
