Turkey orders 176 soldiers arrested for Gülen group links

Turkish authorities ordered the detention of 176 soldiers in the ongoing investigations of an outlawed religious group accused of carrying out a July 2016 coup attempt, state-run Anadolu news agency said on Wednesday.

The Izmir chief prosecutor issued warrants for 108 personnel of different ranks on active duty in the army, and 68 former soldiers who had either retired, resigned or had been expelled over their links to the Gülen movement, Anadolu said.

Turkish police detained at least 115 suspects during raids targeting the movement, the news agency said, citing security sources.

Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) blames the Gülen movement, a religious group led by U.S.-based cleric Fethullah Gülen, for the coup attempt, and has sacked hundreds of thousands of public officials and army personnel in a series of purges since 2016.
