Turkey slams Greece for hundreds of territorial violations this year
Turkey’s government took aim at Greece for what it said were hundreds of violations of its airspace and territorial waters this year.
Greece transgressed Turkish airspace 206 times and entered its territorial waters on 27 occasions, the Turkish Defence Ministry said on Sunday, according to the state-run Anadolu news agency. It also harassed its aircraft 95 times and committed 790 violations by ship of islands with demilitarised status, it said.
Turkey and Greece have been mired in arguments over territory that have almost led to direct military clashes, most recently last year, when Greek warships neared a navy-escorted Turkish hydrocarbon survey ship searching for natural gas off a Greek island. Both countries deny the other’s accusations of territorial violations.
The United States and the European Union have called on the two countries to resolve their differences via negotiation.
